Dawson City

We awoke Monday morning to the sound of rain on the roof of the motorhome. By the time we finished breakfast it had turned to snow again. We decided that it was time to get out of town. The temperature hovered at 34 degrees farenheit as I hooked up the Jeep while topping off the tank on the motorhome. We said goodbye to Whitehorse with our windshield wipers doing their job and a repeat of last years Workhorse chassis problem. Yes, we have another broken sparkplug wire. I did a quick fix in the rain to get us going and we headed north. Somehow the sights seem a little too gloomy to stop and photograph when it is snowing. However, about 130 miles north of Whitehorse the snow/rain stopped and the skys began to clear. We even got out of the motorhome to take photos of Five Fingers Rapids, a barrier to steamboat travel up the Yukon River. They could make it down stream without a problem but had to be towed up Five Finger Rapids.

The further north we drove the nicer the weather got. By the time we reached the view of Tintina Trench, a very large earthquake fault that extends all the way through Alaska, the temperature was up to 66 degrees and the sun was shining through the clouds.

An added pleasure on the Kondike Loop is the profusion of wild flowers, moslty yellow and blue. Unfortunatley there are few places to pull the Winnebago off the highway to take good photos. Mary captured this on as I quickly slowed to a stop.

We arrived in Dawson City at 4:30 PM and once the motorhome was established in Dawson City RV Park I got my lawn chair out and relaxed. After dinner we drove into town and then up to a place called Midnight Dome to check out the view.

Mary was having trouble getting to sleep so she decided to get up at 11:30 PM. Looking out the window she saw this rainbow with the rain still falling in front of it.

Today we will explore the Dawson City area.
