Haines

Early this morning we drove to Chilkoot Lake, about 7 miles out of Haines, to look for Bald Eagle. We saw a number of them but none were close enough for a good photograph so we headed back to the Winnebago for breakfast.

Chilkoot Lake

The road to Chilkoot Lake follows the edge of Lutak Inlet and is very scenic.

After breakfast and a brief visit to Dalton City, the movie set where "White Fang" was filmed, we headed for Chilkat State Park.  The weather when we left the Winnebago was very promising. A bit of blue sky with the sun peaking through.  By the time we reached Chilkat Inlet the wind was blowing strongly.  We stopped to check out some bird activity on the shore and I was able to capture a few good images of immature and mature Bald Eagles.

The scenery along the shore was spectacular with a small fishing boat harbor and a fish cannery adding to the charm.

When we finally reached the end of Chikat State Park we were treated to a fine view of Rainbow Glacier and Davidson Glacier.

The Fireweed is out in force now and we see it everywhere.  I found out that Fireweed is not all that easy to capture effectively with the camera and have made it my quest to do so.  The image I captured today comes close but I still have work to do.

After returning to the Winnebago to consume our picnic lunch out of the cold wind, we toured the most unusual museum of our adventure.  Haines is the home of the Hammer Museum which contains a collection of some 1500 hammers of every type and size.  We also visited the Sheldon museum which exhibits items from the history of Haines and the native cultures.

Our final adventure of the day was to attend a performance of the Chilkat Dancers Storytelling Theater where they act out stories from the native Tlingit culture.  It was very well done and entertaining.

After a full days experience of Haines we are back at the Winnebago ready to enjoy a leisurely dinner of Beef Stroganoff and a nice glass of Syrah.  It is nice to be feeling well again and looking forward to more fine Alaskan adventures.
